Lubricants

Petrol

Automotive lubricants have over recent years become more and more complicated. Matching lubricant to application especially when you are servicing a variety of vehicles can feel like a mine field, especially as the consequences for error are becoming more expensive to resolve. To this end Revolution has developed a range of lubricants for the service garage, HGV and PSV operations, independent mechanic and enthusiast that can cover all your requirements, giving you peace of mind and at the same time minimizing the range of grades, specifications and stocks you are required to hold.

Using the correct lubricant is essential in ensuring the long term reliability and protection of your engine. Every Revolution Oil product is engineered to perform a specific task, assuring you of the highest performance for your own individual requirement. It is critical to match the specification required to the product when choosing an engine oil. It is quite often confusing to discover that there are many different grades of engine oils, from 15w/40 to 0w/40 and many more besides. These grades are simply the viscosity (thickness) of the oil over varying temperature ranges. Our experience is that many buyers are confused into thinking that an engine oils viscosity rating is related to its performance, but unfortunately it isn`t.

These performance and viscosity classifications or sequences are shown as either ACEA, API or your vehicle manufacturer (Original Equipment Manufacturer) OEM will specify use of a lubricant that will meet its own specification. Look at the vehicle manufacturer handbook and you will find guidance on which lubricant to use. For example; 10w/40 MB 228.5/228.51 is a Mercedes Benz specification for the new (08) Mercedes Sprinters. This does not however mean that any 10w/40 will do. There are many 10w/40’s on the market and they all hold different specifications or classifications. This particular specification is related to low SAPS lubricant technology (see low SAPS section) and putting an incorrect oil in the engine will cause seriously expensive damage.

ACEA is the European Automobile Manufacturers Association and a typical ACEA specification would look something like ACEA A3,B4,E2. The ACEA 2007 European sequences for service fill oils compromise three sets(classes) of sequences, one for gasoline and light duty diesel engines, one specifically for gasoline and light duty engines with after treatment devices and one for heavy duty diesel engines. Within these each of these categories are the following (A1/B1, A3/B3, A3/B4, & A5/B5) for gasoline and light duty diesel engines, (C1, C2, C3, C4) for engine with after treatment systems and (E2, E4, E6, E7) for heavy duty diesel engines. An example of just one of these would be;

(E2) A general purpose oil for naturally aspirated and turbocharged heavy duty diesel engines, medium to heavy duty cycles and mostly normal oil drain intervals.

Most other classifications are much more complicated than this. This serves to demonstrate that the vehicle manufacturer has identified which of these classifications relates to their engine, and the oil has been developed to meet these requirements. This is especially important as increasing demands on drain intervals, fuel economy  and emission control are putting further requirements on the technology of new automotive lubricants.

API is the American Petroleum Institute. These certifications meet the current engine protection standard and fuel economy requirements of the International Lubricant Standardisation and Approval Committee (ILSAC). A Typical API specification might be API SL/CG-4. The letter ‘S’ followed by another letter (for example ‘SL’) refers to oils suitable for gasoline engines. The letter ‘C’ followed by another letter (for example ‘CG-4’) refers to the oils suitability for diesel engines. An example of just one of these would be;

(CI-4) Introduced in 2002, for high speed, four stroke, engines designed to meet 2004 exhaust emission standards implemented in 2002. CI-4 oils are formulated to sustain engine durability where exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is used and are intended for use with diesel fuels ranging in sulphur content up to 0.5% weight. Can be used in place of CD, CE, CF-4, CG-4 and CH-4 oils.

API SM/CJ-4 is the current classification and more details can be found from the API website www.api.org Similarly for further information on the ACEA classifications please visit www.acea.be

This brief summary of engine oil specifications and classifications only really touches the surface of engine oil technology. This is the importance of ensuring the oil you purchase meets the specifications for the application required. The best way to do this is to find the specification required and make sure the technical data sheet (TDS) of the oil lists the specification required. This way you are covered if anything should go wrong.

At Revolution we understand the difficulties of getting the correct lubricant or range of lubricants to meet your requirements and we have a technical department who specialize in finding you the correct product for the application. Please do not hesitate to give us a call and we will do our utmost to find you a solution to your oil application dilemmas. Remember that most oils will have a Petrol and a Diesel specification (see above) but for ease of classification the following is a full list of all our ‘petrol’ engine oils:

  • Removes black sludge
  • Protects the engine as it cleans

Running In Oil
This product is a  specially formulated, multi grade running in engine oil. The advancement in engineering techniques and metallurgy has almost removed the need for “running in” components. However the benefit for running in re-fitted engines especially diesels has long been recognised. Running In Oil is formulated from selected base oils and additives. It helps bed in re fitted liners, pistons and rings especially in normally aspirated diesels where low pressures around the rings do not allow for quick bedding in. It also helps when bores have been re ground.
Benefits:

  • Correctly beds in components
